Georgia Health Plans Get Tax Breaks

georgia health insuranceSeveral new Georgia state laws become law as we ring in the new year today.  Among these new laws is one which will eliminate both state and local taxes for Georgia health insurers who offer high-deductible health insurance plans.  The tax break will save insurance companies an estimated $146 Million over 5 years.  The idea behind the law is that it will ultimately save the Georgia Government money as a proliferation of high-deductible health plans will provide coverage for the estimated 1.7million Georgia residents who lack health insurance and end up costing the state money, however critics of the plan question whether this law will do anything to reduce the number of uninsured.

this is the website for the Georgia state children's health insurance program - low cost for lower income families.

For the wife, she'd only qualify for it if she's pregnant, but then the baby counts as another household member.

Otherwise, your best bet is to get quotes through a local, independent agent for an insurance plan, but it's NOT cheap.

One more non-insurance alternative - www.medi-share.org, it's a medical bill sharing group based on Christian principles. It's NOT insurance.

But it's better than nothing, IF they'll take you.

Can the auto insurance company pay me directly for my medical expenses or do they have to pay the doctor?

I was in an auto accident and I have medical insurance. My medical insurance covered my medical expenses; however, I wanted to know if the auto insurance is still liable for those expenses? It seems as if my having medical insurance should benefit me and not the liable party's auto insurance company. If I did not have medical insurance the auto insurance company would still have to pay for those expenses. So shouldn't they still have to pay for those expenses and I get what ever is left that my medical insurance company did not pay? Are there any laws statures that back this up in Georgia? I am trying to settle this claim without getting an attorney and I need all the help I can get. Any advice would be helpful. I am in the process of writing a demand letter. Thanks for all the help.

Your medical insurance provider will collect from the insurance company of the driver who caused your injuries. This process is called subrogation. It is standard practice throughout the US.

You are not entitled to dual benefit from your injuries. Go ahead and consult an attorney -- he or she will almost certainly tell you the same thing.

If you have a pain and suffering claim, that would be paid by the insurance company of the at-fault driver, assuming that there is any room left on his liability coverage. If he had minimum liability that's probably been exhausted already. An attorney can help with that part of your claim if need be.

COBRA Benefits Pose Burden for Unemployed Georgians - WABE

Georgians who rely on COBRA for their family health insurance, are spending nearly 85% of their unemployment benefit just to pay for the monthly premiums. That's according to a report released today by the Washington-based health care advocacy group Families USA.

Under COBRA, people who lose their jobs are allowed to continue health coverage under their former employers' plans. The catch is, they may have to pay the full amount of the premium, plus 2% for administrative costs.

Linda Smith Lowe, a Georgia consumer health advocate, says anyone can imagine what happens then.

LOWE: People just end up dropping the COBRA coverage - not because they want to. They understand how important it is, but there's just not any way to manage it.

The COBRA burden for unemployed Georgians isn't the worst in nine states, the average monthly family premium exceeds what they get in unemployment benefits.
