I want to start a roofing business in Louisiana, can I just purchase general liability without workmens comp?

I want to start a roofing business in Louisiana, can I just purchase general business liability insurance without workmens comp? It will be a small company just 3 of us(me and 2 sons)....which are covered on personal insurance policies....Please help!!!!

If you set up your company as a partnership where all 3 of you are partners (and you do not employ anyone else not even a day laborer) you can probably decline coverage. However, you need to make sure that you can do this with regard to Louisiana law. Consult with an insurance agent who is licensed in Louisiana and who specializes in business insurance or attorney for verification. Or you can also consult with the State at (225) 342-7555. If you can decline coverage and choose to do so, realize that each of you will need to have health insurance, life insurance and disability insurance which might not be so easy to get because of your occupation. Roofing is considered one of the most hazardous employments due to the propensity for falls.

Your agent should be able to sell you commercial general liability coverage and if you have chosen to decline the workers compensation will probably ask you to sign a waiver. If you can and do choose to waive your right, I would also have each of your sons sign for the sake of clarity and to avoid any future misunderstandings.

Good Luck

How do I add my landlord onto my business insurance policy?

I just moved into a new business location. My lease states that I must list my landlord as an additional insured. Is that easy to do? Do I just call my insurance and have them add right away or do I have to wait until it is time to renew? Also, approximately by what percentage will that cause my insurance to go up? I have already had a rate increase because I live in Louisiana (Katrina). It is still affordable but I am scared that adding on the additional insured may cause it to double, which I can't really afford.

This is a very common situation and is easily addressed by requesting your agent / company to add an additional insured endorsement. It should be done at no charge, but some companies make a modest charge just for processing the paper.

You may be interested in knowing that the standard business liability policy in use by most US insurance companies automatically includes your landlord as an additional insured if your lease agreement calls for it. Technically, you don't even need an endorsement to the policy. Most landlords, however, want to "see it in writing" on the policy, however.

Talk to your insurance agent. Should not be a big deal but it might change your rate.

Jindal cites priorities - 2TheAdvocate

Gov. Bobby Jindal told a business crowd Thursday he plans to focus on health care, high school dropouts, sex offenders and higher education funding in the new year.

Jindal outlined his plans for 2009 at the annual meeting of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, called LABI, in Baton Rouge.

The governor will have to pursue his proposals under tight financial constraints because of falling oil prices and a faltering economy.

The Jindal administration is projecting a $2 billion budget shortfall to continue services and to pay for increased costs in the fiscal year that starts July 1.

In the current year’s $30 billion budget, the governor had to cut $341 million in state general fund spending.

“A shortage of money will not stop us from changing Louisiana,” the governor told LABI.

Jindal already is working on a restructuring of the way the state delivers health care to the poor and uninsured.

Among other things, the governor wants to provide health insurance coverage to an additional 100,000 people.
