How to start my own gourmet treats business from home for sell via the internet? What steps do I need to take?
Jul 31, 2007 by mommysthreeboys | Posted in Small Business
I am a married stay at home mom of 3 boys. My husband works but at this time one income is not enough for a family. I love to bake and make desserts. I am looking for info on how to start my own business online to sell my desserts. I live in Maryland and wanted to know what licenses and requirements there are to use my kitchen at home to bake and sell these items online. I am also looking for info on any legit work from home business that does not require me to sell anything (i.e. Mary Kay, Avon, insurance etc.) I am not much of a seller, unless it is something that really interests me like my desserts. I have applied for LiveOps before but they were not hiring at the time. I have seen a couple of sites that say own your own online Dollar Store and Shopping Mall, and they say that they do not require any type of money or fees to get started and all you have to do is pick the items that you want to have in your online store. Thanks everyone for all and any help I recieve.
Before you begin selling edible items from home, you will need to do some research to keep yourself protected. I have begun the process of an at home biz that sells food items. You need to speak to your insurance agent first. They will tell you what insurances you require so you don't lose your home if someone claims to get ill from your product. Also your local zoning office, check to see that your biz is permissible by your town/city. You will need a tax i.d. number available at your city or town's Dept of Revenue Services office. You will also need to check with your local health dept. and acquire a business license. The Small Biz Assoc can be a great help and many places have a local division called SBDC (small biz development ctr). There's a lot to check into to have a legit food biz from home and it's best to take the right path to ensure all goes well. Best wishes.

Why would my insurance company say my car is not garaged in Maryland?
May 28, 2008 by ilovealac | Posted in Insurance & Registration
I just got a notice in the mail that my insurance is being canceled in July because "it is not garaged in Maryland for more than 10 months per year."
I don't get it. What would give them this idea? Why would they say this? I live with my mother in Maryland, I work in Maryland. I do go to Penn State, but I commute to a campus near home.
Wtf?
Can someone please explain this?
Well, I asked because I thought there may be someone out here that can tell me what they base their information on.
I pay income tax in Maryland, have insurance through a Maryland company, I have license and registration is Maryland... all is Maryland EXCEPT my college. What else could they base this accusation on?
So, I spoke to them today. Apparently they say that my car has PA tags........
It doesn't? It has MD tags. I am even more confused than I was before.
You have told them, or their investigation has revealed, that you are not a resident of the state of Maryland. What state do you pay state income tax in? That is where you live. It also affects what state your license and registration is in.
But if you're interested in WHY they are saying that, call and ask. No out out here can tell you.

Our home is gutted due to mold. Our insurance only covers $5000 for remediation. Can we file for loss of use?
Jul 18, 2008 by marti b | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
Maryland has mold exclusionary clauses in all homeowners policies as of 2002. Secondary to roof leak, water seepage, and initial shoddy construction we found out less than a year ago we were mold infested--record breakingly. Worried about be labeled as an uninsurable home we did not file a claim. It was recently brought to our attention that we should consider filing a claim as we have coverage for loss of use of our dwelling. Our property loss, and reconstruction/remediation is HUGE! What if anything does the loss of use cover? Specifically does it cover packing, moving, and storing our belongings? Does it cover our rental living space? Utilities? Reinstallation of Mobile shelving? Architectural fees or any building constructions costs associated with the roof/basement water damage and late to discover secondary mold?
HELP! My partner has to use his entire retirement account to pay for all of this horrendous nightmare
It really depends on what your policy specifies. My loss of use portion of the policy will cover hotel bills/rental unit and living expenses while I am not able to live in my home due to a covered event. My loss of use has a coverage limit, so I would be paid up to that limit. It does not cover packing, moving or storage. I have a code upgrade coverage but it has limits, too. In your case, I suggest you read your policy and call either your agent or broker to clarify what coverages you have or don't have before you file for it. Best wishes and good luck.

Sprinkler law could affect older residences - Annapolis Capital
10.01.09
The mandatory sprinkler law for new homes that passed this week also applies to rebuilding damaged homes. And insurance agents say some home-owners policies will not pay for the added cost of installing the required sprinklers if disaster strikes. "Some companies include the coverage and others don't," said Charlene Hardee, a Nationwide agent in Edgewater. Skipping the piece of insurance called "ordinance" or "law" coverage can shave cost from the premium and most policy buyers don't notice it's missing. "People don't know to ask," Ms. Hardee said. The sprinkler law will affect anyone who does substantial work to his home, including large additions or rebuilding after a fire or flood if the work costs 50 percent or more than the value of the home. Although many homeowners insurance policies contain ordinance or law coverage that will pay for the various extra costs of reconstructing a home to meet current building standards, not all insurance agents offer it to their customers, industry experts said.
