Teens accused of Elder Abuse at Nursing Home

I just saw this disturbing story on the news today. Two innocent-looking teenage girls are accused of harassing and abusing Alzheimer’s and Dementia residents in a Minnesota nursing home. It makes you feel sad at the state our youth is in. Obviously, this does not generalize the entire generation. However, hearing about incidents like this [...]

Home=MI, School=MN, New Car=MN, Insurance=?

Might (40-50% will) be getting a car soon. I'm a student in Minnesota; 'home' is Michigan. What should I do about the license plate, insurance tags? Anything else I left out? I saw somewhere that I should consider getting a Minnesota license, but I live on-campus.

Alexander T, I suggest you find a nearby car insurance agent to assist you. Since I live in North Dakota I can't recommend an agent in Minnesota, but here is an resource that can help you. http://www.autoadviceonline.com/Auto-Insurance-Quote.html

Good Luck.

A question about life insurance in Minnesota that maybe gets a little sticky?

My mother married a man in 1991. She retired from Quest in 2000 or 2001. I had moved out around then. She had life insurance and switched the benificiary from me to him. He died in 2004, but she always procrastinated putting me back on, though she continued to pay the priemiums. I moved back in to help her out. Yesterday morning I found her dead in the living room. After some dorking around, I know I get her three vehicles and the house. But since he was still on her life insurance and not me, I thought I was screwed out of that. My grampa kind of thinks the same way but wants to talk to a lawyer Monday first. I just got home from the funeral home planning her wake and funeral. When I got home, a woman called and asked for my mom. I told her what had happened and she asked if there was insurance. I said yes and explained the situation. She said that it is BS for the insurance company (AARP) could keep it. She said she worked for the county attorny's office. (cont.)
She said what I have to do is prove he has been dead. Prove that mom has died. Prove she is my mother. That makes me next of kin. She said as long as my mom was paying, the insurance has no right to keep what she put in. And whether it be a sibling or child, next of kins is entitled to it. What are your thoughts? Do I have a shot at it?

The insurance company never keeps the money.
The state has a pre determined next of kin provision and it usually goes spouse, children, grandchildren. If you have any siblings they would also be entitled.

You should get the death certificates together for your mom and step father those will be needed

Is Firstline home security system any good? How to they compare to ADT or Brinks?

I had a sales rep offer me free installation and equipment. He said there was no upfront cost, only paying the monthly payment. I was quoted $39 a month plus tax which comes to about $44 a month. I live in a townhome and was told I would be able to get at least 10% off my personal property insurance because of the home security. Does this sound like a good deal? How's the quality of Firstline compared to ADT or Brinks? Are they reliable. I'm located in Minnesota and seem not to have a local office. Should I be worried if something were to happen with no technicans to come fix it asap?

Nothing worth getting is free. Aside from the fact you will be paying almost double standard monitoring rates, you are going to be looped into a long term contract and you may or may not own the equipment in the end. Thing is, to these larger companies (ADT & Brinks included) alarm systems and monitoring is a numbers game... the more they have the happier they are. In order to be successful at this game you need to get the systems in as fast and as cost effective as possible. hmmmm that sounds safe.

My suggestion to you would be to take a look around locally. Just because a commercial says "use us we are the best" does not mean it is true. Try to find a local company that is not affiliated with one of the big numbers game companies. I have been approached by a one of the companies on your list but I refuse to sell my clients out. I will not go into details or name the company, just suffice to say my customers would not have been happy with the outcome.

Also, I would strongly recommend against wireless. I have written a number of articles on home security related topics, both electronic and physical. These can be found on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca. Protection 101 as well as False alarm info may be of interest. In addition, there is an article on the truth about wireless alarms in the archive.

Minnesota nursing homes to seek more aid - Minneapolis Star Tribune

As state officials begin pulling out red pens to cope with a nearly $5 billion budget shortfall, groups representing nursing homes and the uninsured said Wednesday they will ask the Legislature for millions in additional health spending.

"We have to get past the narrative that this session is only about balancing the budget," said Rep. Paul Thissen, DFL-Minneapolis, who will sponsor legislation backed by both groups. "We can do more."

Legislative action on spending bills is expected to start slowly while the state waits for a new economic forecast next month and for possible help from a new economic stimulus package under discussion in Washington, D.C.

But both proposals face tough sledding, and health and human services spending may be prime targets for budget cuts. Gov. Tim Pawlenty will offer his budget proposal Jan. 27.

One proposal offered Wednesday would cover about 77,000 uninsured children by 2010. A more modest bill in 2007, which passed the House but not the Senate, would have covered 20,000 children at a cost of $250 million a year.
