Does Mexico have quality medical care insurance at affordable rates?
Jan 08, 2007 by hawndawg | Posted in Other - Mexico
I heard that american retirees are enjoying some pretty good medical care in Mexico for about $500 per year. Is this true?
It seems that the doctors in america are all foreign educated anyway so maybe the doctors there in mexico are about as good as most here in america now. ( except the Mayo clinic and other very expensive private care facilities that i could never get anyway)
What areas of Mexico are best for USA retirees?
You can sign up for IMSS, which is the Mexican National Health Insurance program after you move here and establish a residence. I am 65, American, retired in Mexico. The insurance rates are based on age, so people over 60 pay the highest rate. This year my premium for one year was equal to $270.00. The first year, your use is limited ( can't use for pre-existing conditions.) After that it, covers everything with no deductibles. Private pay medical care is a fraction of what it is in the states. Some American retirees like to live in touristy areas with thousands of other gringos. These areas are expensive. If you prefer an area with lower costs and fewer gringos, there are many good places. A small town near a large city is a nice idea..lower costs, but advantages of big city nearby. Do web search for "retiring in Mexico." There is lots of info available.

moving to Mexico, pensioner, 65 plus, info on medical insurance, personal taxes ,?
Aug 17, 2007 by michael m | Posted in United Kingdom
will I be taxed on worldwide income, uk investments etc, uk occupational pension etc
If you move to Mexico and become non resident in the UK for tax purposes, you are still liable to UK tax on any UK income received. Mexico may also wish to tax you on your worldwide income. However, there is a double taxation agreement between the UK/Mexico under which there is full releif available for pension income. If you have any governement service pensions eg armed forces, local authority, you must be a national of Mexico to get the relief. Therefore, they will remain liable to UK tax.
Private pensions and the state pension can be exempted in the UK under the agreement. See this link for the form you can use to make the claim http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/dtindividual.pdf
If your pensions become exempt, then your personal allowance will be free to be used against any interest generated from the UK.
Not sure about health care, try the National Insurance Office for those leaving/living out of the UK 0845 915 4811.

Where is a good place to retire that is cheap and the medical insurance will be covered by the US BCBS?
Feb 13, 2007 by paul y | Posted in Insurance
I have good insurance blue cross..and i want to retire in another country.mexico or the philippines..will the bc bs cover me out of country? how about on a vacation:?
Typically, only in the event of an emergency. Check with them, it can depend on who you retire from... Medicare won't cover any services outside the U.S & and territories.
So, think about living in the Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico, or The Keys... Most insurance companies will cover you there, if you have out of network benefits... (or, if my some chance, they have participating providers in that area)

Health coverage after a layoff - abc7news.com

5 Steps to Take for Holding on to Your Insurance Coverage 1. COBRA. While this may be the most expensive option, it's a good one for someone with a pre-existing medical condition. For people recently laid off, the first, immediate option to review is COBRA coverage. COBRA is required of businesses with 20 or more employees. It provides continuation of group health coverage that otherwise might be terminated. One common myth about COBRA coverage is that it is only good for 18 months, but quite often this is not the case as it can be continued indefinitely through state COBRA programs. First steps include checking with the employer's human resources department to receive complete information on how to qualify for COBRA, the costs and how to apply. If COBRA is an option, it should be carefully reviewed before being refused as once it's dismissed, it can't be recalled. 2. Going from a double- to a single-income family. For the family in a two-income home where one parent has been laid off, checking into programs like Healthy Families is an important step. In many states, a family of 4 can make up to $60,000 (California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, D.C.) and in other states up to $50,000 a year (Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, New Mexico, New York, Washington) and still qualify the children for comprehensive coverage. These programs may provide low-cost health coverage for children and teens up to age 19 including comprehensive health, dental and vision coverage. Moving the family's young dependents from private insurance to government sponsored plans can reduce monthly premiums and perhaps make a family's adult private premium coverage affordable.
