Approximate cost of business liability insurance for Virginia?
Jul 18, 2008 by Sidewinder | Posted in Insurance
I understand that there is no "average" for liability insurance. In my specific case, I live in central Virginia, have leased a one-room office and offer financial education (not a CFP, rather teach people how to budget, etc. - not sell financial products).
Limits of liability not less than $500,000 for an accident affecting any one person; and not less than $1,000,000 for an accident affecting more than one person; and $50,000 for property damage.
Thanks!
OK, you don't get "property damage" liability on a business policy.
Sounds like you're just a consultant type guy - liability will likely be based on either square footage or gross sales, but either way, I"m betting that a million of coverage, should run you around $750 a year.
Excluding professional liability.
Something to think about, though, you might be able to get a bop - including some property coverage - for $600 a year.

Home Business & Insurance?
Jun 30, 2008 by Voice of Liberty | Posted in Insurance
I am staring a business which is based at my home address. (This is in West Virginia) This business does not require that customers come to my house and actually all "business" will be conducted elsewhere. I just resgistered it at my home address because a physical address was required for me to register the business.
Problem: I didn't think about this until now... My homeowners' insurance is marked "residential." Insurance designated as "commercial" costs about 3x as much.
Question: Because this is my place of residence, am I still required to change my insurance policy because I am running a business out of my house as well? Also, does it matter that the business will be conducted elswhere, but is just registered to my residential address.
I was just wondering what people with internet-based businesses do about their home-owners insurance. I imagine thaey don't even tell the insurance company that they have the business. Is that fraud?
Home insurance covers lots of different things. I'm not familiar with the West Virginia laws and regulations, so I suggest you contact a local home insurance agent. http://www.usinsuranceadvisor.com/Home-Insurance.html They will be able to assist you.

Does anyone work for, run, or own a child care business in Virginia?
Apr 18, 2007 by Day Sleeper | Posted in Small Business
I need some help with starting my own program and am looking for some mentoring. Please tell me anything you might consider important.
How much does it cost to start up?
What licenses or permits must I have?
Are there any insurance concerns and how do I handle that?
Any information would be helpful.
I forwarded this link (http://tinyurl.com/2b8ccv) to a friend of mine some time ago who was in the same position and they said it helped them get started...might be of interest to you? Worth checking out at least so you don't find yourself overloaded with what can be done and what can't be done in regards to your daycare and/or any city ordinances that might come into play.

Lobbyists Find Job Security In Crunch - Washington Post
10.01.09
The economic downturn does not appear to have hurt the lucrative business of the lobbying corps in Annapolis and Richmond. In some ways, it is clearly helping. Even as they cut costs elsewhere, many businesses and nonprofit groups say they are loath to forgo their hired help in the capitals. "The tendency seems to be just the opposite," said Gerard Evans , one of the top-earning lobbyists in Annapolis. "As businesses get squeezed and the bottom line becomes more precarious, they turn to lobbyists more and not less." As of yesterday in Maryland, 2,167 registration forms had been filed by lobbyists to represent clients since the close of last year's legislative session, according to the State Ethics Commission. That is up from 2,050 in the comparable period a year ago -- and that was quite a busy time. It included a special session in which multiple taxes were raised. Data from Virginia are less precise but suggest that the lobbying corps remains vibrant. The number of lobbyists signed up this year, 1,595, slightly exceeds that of last year, according to figures compiled this week by the Virginia Public Access Project, a nonpartisan tracker of money in state politics.
