With eye on future, Boeing to cut force - TheNewsTribune.comBoeing expects to trim its Puget Sound-area commercial airplane division payroll by 4,500 workers this year as the company cuts costs in a weak economy. Scott Carson, Boeing Commercial Airplanes president, said in a news release Friday that the company was preparing for potential hard times. “We are taking prudent actions to make sure Boeing remains well-positioned in today’s difficult economic environment,” Carson said. The company is tightening its belt and returning its payroll levels to the numbers it employed at the beginning of last year, about 63,500 in the Commercial Airplanes Group. The company will rely on attrition and cutbacks of contract workers to reduce the worker count. Layoffs, however, also will likely be necessary to reach the employment goals, said Boeing spokesman Jim Proulx. The first 60-day layoff notices will go out in late February. But the two unions that represent thousands of workers in the Puget Sound area question the decision. |
