The first night of Rachel Sadd's training for a triathlon, she worked to finish four laps in the pool.
Worn out, she looked at her Team in Training coaches and said, "How many laps do I eventually have to do? 20?"
Try 72.
"But (the Team in Training coaches) start you slow, and every week you just gradually build up," said Sadd, 27, of Bellevue. "Everyone finished the race and did really, really well."
Team in Training is a 20-year-old national endurance sports training program that benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The local Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia chapter has been around for 15 years, and at any given time is training about 150 participants for half-marathons, marathons, triathlons and 100-mile bike rides.
They are recruiting for the spring and summer racing seasons, which include the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and Half-Marathon on May 3.
"We already have a lot of interest generated now that participants from the past as well as people who are new to the program want to do the Pittsburgh Marathon," said Stephanie Lackner, the local Leukemia & Lymphoma Society campaign coordinator. "People from all walks of life have been contacting us to get information."
