"This was a top school official, well-compensated,
whose charge and duty was to protect the interests of the
school district and its students," Acting U.S. Attorney
Ralph J. Marra said. "Instead, he acted as a petty
thief who had no qualms about literally stealing lunch money
from the cafeteria."
Walsh was the district's business administrator for
12 years before being appointed superintendent in July 2006.
He resigned from his $142,000-a-year job in October 2007.
Walsh admitted he stole about $68,000 over two years from
the cafeteria, then diverted checks from the school's
general bank account to conceal the losses. He also admitted
filing false expense reports and was reimbursed $3,300 and
that he bilked the school district out of $19,000 by
receiving tuition and life insurance premium reimbursements
that exceeded the authorized level.
Walsh faces 12 to 18 months in prison under federal
guidelines when sentenced by U.S. District Judge Renee Bumb
Walsh. Sentencing is scheduled for April 20.
