How much tax should I expect to pay on a life insurance inheritance in Illinois?

I was the sole beneficiary on my mother's policy. It is only $16k but I have 5 kids so I need to know what to do at tax time.
Please accept my condolences on the loss of your mother.
The proceeds of a life insurance policy is not taxable if left to a person. It is not considered part of the estate, unless the estate was the beneficiary. It is then only taxable if the estate , including the insurance, is valued at more than $2 million in 2008 or $3.5 million in 2009.
You will have to check the state law of Illinois to see if there is an Inheritance Tax that you might owe for the rest any part of the estate that you may inherit.

There could be a problem, depending on the laws of each state.
First of all, this is not only an insurance question, but a securities question (VUL is a securities product), so you need to understand the securities laws of each state as well as their insurance laws.
Most states do not mind one of their residents signing an insurance application in another state (insurance laws), but may have a different read on a securities product, which VUL is.
Some states also require that an agent who sells an insurance policy to one of their residents must hold a valid insurance license from their state.
In addition, even if you may write the application on a resident of Illinois, you must use an application form approved in Illinois, as the person will be issued an Illinois version of the policy. So, if the Texas -approved application is not the one approved in Illinois, there could be a problem.

my father passed away in may 2006. i would like to know how to find out if he left a will (he always said he had one). also i would like to know who the beneficiaries of his life insurance were. my father was remarried and I can't go to his wife.
contact the insurance company with proof of his death, ss# and they should be able to tell you if a policy was in place and how is listed as the beneficiary.
an estate attorney should be able to advise you on how to get proof of a will. His wife must disclose a will to all family members or you can contest any claims she makes against your father's estate.
