Recommendations for Selling a Book of Commercial Business Insurance in Illinois?

Hey there,

I'm an independent agent, working for an independent agency. I am leaving to accept an offer in another state. I have a book of business that earns $100,000 commission per year and would like to know the approximate worth of this book (2-3 times?) and the best options for selling it. I am a corporate officer at my current employer and I do not have a non-compete clause.

I would appreciate any suggestions, as I will not be able to serve these customers in my new state and my current employer will not be able to serve them as well as I have.

Thank you!

In Ohio it is typically 2 times commission. Probably the same in Illinois. As far as selling approach the independent agencies in your area. They may want to role the book into their own companies, but I guess that won't matter to you once the sale is made.

Is it a law for Illinois employers to have workman's compsensation insurance?

My former employer, a doctor, had no workman's compsensation insurance. His business was part of a franchise. Should he legally have to have workman's comp insurance?

Small employers in IL are allowed to "opt out" of purchasing workers comp coverage. That does NOT, however, get them off the hook for paying benefits!!

So no, he likely is not legally required to carry it. But yes, he still has to pay benefits if you were injured - medical payments and lost wages.

You'll likely need to hire an attorney to get the money out of him, though. In my experience, guys like that don't voluntarily cough it up - you have to drag them through court.

Still the Governor: Blago Stays Busy Doing the People's Business

Rod Blagojevich vowed that despite his legal woes, he is still the governor of Illinois

His appointment of Roland Burris to President-elect Barack Obama's Senate seat was the ultimate reminder of his incumbency. But Blagojevich, always upbeat and cordial in front of the cameras, has been sending out little reminders ever since his arrest a month ago and the convening of a panel to consider whether to recommend impeachment.

Here's a sampling of the 20 or so bills he's signed and advisories issued:

Jan. 8: " Governor Blagojevich Urges Women to get Screened During January - Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Governor Rod R. Blagojevich today declared January Cervical Cancer Awareness Month in Illinois and is urging all women, especially women who smoke, to get screened regularly for cervical cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, women who smoke are almost twice as likely as non-smokers to develop cervical cancer."
