Thank You, E.P. Union Mole For Passing This Along

healthcareHere is a copy of what the East Providence Education Association has been sending out to the 500 teachers affected by the 5% raise roleback  and 20% health insurance co-share imposed on them by the East Providence School Committee, in a last ditch effort to avoid widespread layoffs, school closings, and much worse.

Gee, there’s nothing in this message about sacrificing a little to help the city avoid outright bankruptcy.

Oh right, it’s only about them.

The East Providence teachers are defending all of our rights in their fight not to allow the school committee and city to unilaterally roll back their wages and impose co-share amounts. East Providence teachers will be attending the school committee meeting Tuesday evening at East Providence City Hall (7:30 PM) and can use your support. Local President, Val Lawson, and the entire local union are staying united and fighting for all of us.

Come and show your solidarity! Stand up for Collective Bargaining!

I will confirm the time via email before the EP meeting next week.

I live in Massachusetts. Was in a single car motor vehicle accident in Rhode Island. I was a passenger.?

The accident happened about one month ago. Got seriously hurt. The owner of the vehicle I was in lives in Rhode Island, where the car is also Registered and Insured. The insurance policy is a bare minimum policy. I have no household automobile insurance policies and do not own a car. I live in an apartment. I am not on anybody's insurance policy. My question is, "If it becomes necessary, can I file suit against the driver of the motor vehicle and his insurance carrier in Massachusetts.......or must I file suit in Rhode Island where the accident happened, where the defendant lives, and where the defendant's motor vehicle is registered and insured. Please refer me to any Massachusetts and/or Rhode Island statutes that might be helpful. Thank you.

You can sue the driver's insurance company and be paid in full usually without having to go to court. I believe it's 20 or 40K per passenger for minimum coverage. The lawsuit would take place in RI because that's where the driver is insured. It doesn't matter where you live or if you're insured.

health insurance & full time college students - Rhode Island Laws?

my boyfriend is 20 years old. he is a full time college student and has no time for a job. he still lives with his mother because he's saving up money to move out on his own. because he doesn't have a job, he has no health insurance. when he turned 18, they took him off his mother's health insurance. they have very little money in general. is there anywhere they can go to get support such as food, clothing, etc... and also as a full time student i would think he is liable for health insurance through his school - community college of rhode island (CCRI). your advice is greatly appreciated. thankyou :)

They can go to his church for financial help.

And most colleges DO offer a health plan you can buy into.

But I'd suggest, if they're that broke, he needs to get a full time job, and do college part time.

Three Roadblocks on the Road to Health Reform - American Enterprise Institute

In fact, many health policy analysts point out that Medicare and Medicaid adopted the basic payment policies of private insurance, thereby making overall reform even more difficult. As we have seen time and again, making a lot of noise about health reform does not guarantee change.

What do we want from reform, and what will it take to get us there? To answer this question and see why reform is so difficult, let us look at the three largest components of our health care system--private health insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid--and look at how they work. Each of these major sectors of our health care system creates a roadblock to reform. Each is an open-ended system of payment that encourages everyone involved--consumers and providers--to use more resources than they would in a more normal, less-insured market.

First Roadblock: Private Health Insurance

In 2007, private health insurance and direct payments by individuals accounted for 46 percent ($1.04 trillion) of total health expenditures ($2.3 trillion). The modern form of private health insurance began in the 1930s, but the industry's major growth occurred after World War II. The percentage of those with hospital coverage increased from 10 percent (12.3 million) in 1940 to almost 90 percent (178 million) by 1975.
