Colorado Auto Insurance Rates to Increase
 9 News Colorado reports that a new state law (which came into effect on January 1st) is likely to increase auto insurance rates for Colorado drivers. The law requires insurance companies to automatically enroll policy-holders into a MedPay plan that provides an additional $5,000 in medical coverage. Ever since Colorado repealed its no-fault auto insurance law in 2003, there have been many problems surrounding the reimbursement of medical costs caused by an accident. This program is intended to fix many of these issues. Consumers can only opt out via a written form.
The extra coverage can increase your yearly premiums by $40 to as much as $1,200 per car, depending on your auto insurance rate. MedPay coverage isn’t really necessary if your health insurance covers car accidents, but a lot of policies don’t. Experts say you should think carefully before trying to reduce your auto insurance premiums by dropping out of the program; if you end up in a crash not covered by your health care plan, you may end up paying far more in the end.

Why are there so few car insurance companies in Massachusetts?

Allstate, Statefarm, and independant all don't offer car insurance in Massachusetts. Does someone know why this is?
I remember many years ago (late '70s) when I was applying to M.I.T., the material they sent me said that MA had the highest rate of car theft in the nation. I don't know if that's still the case after more than 25 years, but if so, that could cause there to be few insurance companies there.

What is the best company for CAR INSURANCE in Massachusetts (by best I mean cheapest reasonable option)?

Massachusetts has had a strange relationship with insurance companies for years and recently has deregulated to some degree. Many consumers report that their rates have gone down as a result. Does anyone have a recommendation for which company to switch to or a good place to find out information about the companies? Accident forgiveness would be a plus. Thank you.

Is New Hampshire auto insurance better then Massachusetts auto insurance rates?
Generally, yes, NH insurance rates are less than MA insurance rates. But, it also depends on where you live in each state & the company (there is now limited competition in MA). Also, MA is a PIP state & NH is NOT a PIP state, so there is less coverage in NH.
If you are moving to NH you will need to get a NH license, registration & insurance. If you are not moving & just want to get an address in NH to get insurance there, you can't. You have to sign a Residence Form stating you are actually a resident of NH & live there. It also states that you will notify your insurance as soon as you move out of state (at any time during the policy - even if it is years from the time you sign it). If you are really not a resident of NH and an accident occurs, the company WILL deny coverage & in essence, you were paying for a nonexistent policy.

Burnes eliminated a 15-member Auto Insurance Appeals board yesterday, saying consumers can take their business elsewhere if they disagree with a premium hike. As of April 2009, drivers who get into an accident but feel they are not at fault must take their complaint up with the insurance company. “We’re really trying to put the heat on the companies to do the right thing,” Burnes said, adding the appeals board did not have regulatory authority under the new competitive system. “It’s faster and cheaper for the customers.” Burnes said the appeals process, which costs drivers $50 whether their rate hike is overturned or not, is costly and inefficient. The appeals process takes about seven months. But Mancini pointed out that the appeals board handles roughly 50,000 claims a year, and 45 percent of those appeals are granted, meaning those drivers won’t have to pay for the costly premium hike. “I’d be surprised if 45 people get it overturned now,” said Mancini, who is planning to file legislation to bring back the appeals board.
