Is New Hampshire auto insurance better then Massachusetts auto insurance rates?
Generally, yes, NH insurance rates are less than MA insurance rates. But, it also depends on where you live in each state & the company (there is now limited competition in MA). Also, MA is a PIP state & NH is NOT a PIP state, so there is less coverage in NH.
If you are moving to NH you will need to get a NH license, registration & insurance. If you are not moving & just want to get an address in NH to get insurance there, you can't. You have to sign a Residence Form stating you are actually a resident of NH & live there. It also states that you will notify your insurance as soon as you move out of state (at any time during the policy - even if it is years from the time you sign it). If you are really not a resident of NH and an accident occurs, the company WILL deny coverage & in essence, you were paying for a nonexistent policy.

A friend of mine went to college in New Hampshire. She told me that in New Hampshire the state motto is "live free or die" and insurance on a car is optional but not required. I'm from New York where people pay out their ears for insurance on cars. I can't imagine that this is true. Is it?
It IS true that car insurance is not required in New Hampshire.
I do have insurance now, but I have driven without insurance in the past. The cops don't even ask for your insurance info when you get pulled over (for speeding or whatever). The only time they ever ask for your insurance info is if you get in an accident. If you say that you have no insurance, that's fine. Because you don't need insurance in NH. I know because I was in an accident and told the cop I didn't have insurance. No problem. I didn't get a ticket or anything.
The only time you DO need insurance is if the State of NH says you do. If you get in an accident and can't pay, and they take you to court, the state will probably say that you need insurance from now on. This will also happen if you get convicted of DWI or something. Otherwise, car insurance is not required.
Wearing a seat belt NOT REQUIRED (unless you're a child).
Motorcycle helmets NOT REQUIRED.
Gun ownership available to everyone except felons.
Leave your police state today and move to NH.

Most states have mandatory insurance laws. Those that don't have financial responsibility laws. You don't need insurance, but you must be able to pay for any damage you do, and most people meet that requirement by having an insurance policy.
I suppose if you are as rich as Bill Gates, you can afford to be self insured.
