Are Virginia car insurance rates cheaper than Maryland's?

I live in the DC area and I'm trying to figure out the pros and cons of living in the Virginia or Maryland suburbs. I heard a rumor that if I move to Maryland, my insurance company will jack up the rates. Does that sound right? Why would the rates be higher just because I cross the state line?

Your insurance company is the only one that will know that...just ask them and tell them why you are asking ...they will help you. It is really very easy they just need both zip codes..

And yes it is very possible for rates to vary from state to state depending on the accid ratio for the area you live in....the insurance fraud they have and if they have alot of uninsured drivers that area....plus whether it is "the city" or the "country" makes a difference in rates also...less accidents in the country cause roads are not as congested, etc.

I would say location and driving history are 2 of the major factors when it comes to insurance....

Come on to Florida...your rates will triple...promise.:)

Why is there an additional surcharge added for West Virginia car insurance?

I use to live in W.V. you get taxed for anything and everything, even if you don't know what it is for.

What is normal to pay yearly for car insurance in Virginia?

I've been paying about $1200 per year and I'm starting to wonder if that is high. Does anyone know what the average price a year might be?
Also, I'm a 26 year old female who has had 2 accidents (without fault) and 1 in state speeding ticket. Don't know if that matters.

It's hard to answer with such limited information.
Make sure your current company isn't charging you for
the "non fault" accidents. If they are on your record,
they don't show as no fault. You must get a letter stating that these weren't your fault, if they are on your record. Also,
the speeding ticket will cause your rates to be at an increased rate for 3 years then fall off. If you have full coverage (coverage to cover damage to your auto), that costs more. If your car is older, you don't need to carry collision coverage. Where you live in Virginia makes a difference too. Lots of factors. You can grab your declaration page, DL# for all in the household, and call around for quotes. It doesn't cost anything to do that.

Report: COBRA too costly for many - Richmond Times Dispatch

Published: January 10, 2009

-- When Doug Ashworth left his job last year as a firefighter because of health problems, he lost his health insurance.

He had the option of continuing his insurance under his former employer's plan, but he would have to pay the entire premium.

"It was going to be $1,100 a month," said Ashworth. "When you lose your job and they want $1,100 a month for health insurance, who can afford it? You lose your job, you still have to make your house payment, car payment, utilities, and they want $1,100 a month?"

Ashworth's story is not uncommon, according to a report from the Washington-based advocacy group Families USA that looked at the affordability of this continuation insurance, referred to as COBRA.

According to the report, many people would have to devote a big chunk or most of their unemployment insurance check to pay for individual or family coverage under COBRA benefits.

Virginia-specific numbers in the report show the average monthly unemployment benefit is $1,245, while the average monthly COBRA premium for an individual is $386 and the average monthly family COBRA premium is $1,079.
